Researchers present findings of a five-year clinical trial about low-dose atropine for slowing down the progression of myopia. Myopia is inherited and is often discovered in children when they are between ages eight and 12 years old. During the teenage years, when the body grows rapidly, myopia may become worse. Between the ages of 20 and 40, there is usually little change. Myopia can also occur in adults. Myopic persons are at higher risk of retinal detachment, glaucoma or early cataract.

In the United States, an estimated 42 percent of the population is myopic, up from 25 percent in the 1970s. The incidence of myopia even in developed Asian countries is 80 to 90% among young adults.
