Cirrhosis is characterized by irreversible scarring of the liver and can be caused due to several diseases, including alcoholic liver disease, viral hepatitis (hepatitis B or C virus), non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), autoimmune hepatitis, and Wilson’s disease. Symptoms of cirrhosis generally include fatigue, bleeding, loss of appetite, weight loss, swelling of the legs, and nausea. These symptoms are often displayed at the end-stage of the disease when the liver is extremely injured, making it a challenging condition to treat.
