Gonococcal arthritis is caused by infection with the gram-negative diplococcus Neisseria gonorrhoeae. Gonococcal arthritis constitutes the most common form of gonococcal infection which develops secondary to the urogenital tract infection in about 5% cases of gonorrhea, usually from 3 to 4 weeks after the initial infection.
