Clinically known as condyloma acuminata , the genital wart is a highly prevalent sexually transmitted disease in India. This article gives an overview of the disease and outlines current treatment options. Genital warts are caused by human papillomavirus (HPV). However, 90% of the HPV infection is latent and does not result in the development of warts. HPV has multiple types and type 6 and 11 are frequent for the disease and they are not involved in the development of cervical cancers or anal cancers unlike some other types of HPV.

The disease is known to spread through skin-skin contacts during oral, genital or anal sex with the infected partner. In some cases, the disease can be transmitted to the newborn.
