Symptomatic carotid artery stenosis significantly increases the risk of ischemic strokes. Appropriate management of these patients is necessary to reduce the stroke burden. Generally, carotid artery stenosis is managed through medical, surgical or interventional procedures. This article provides an overviews these strategies and reports observations derived from multiple clinical trials or observational studies. Almost 15-20% of ischemic stroke have carotid artery stenosis as an underlying cause.

In future, carotid artery stenosis patients are likely to increase as rates of type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity is increasing. Hence, appropriate management of these patients may reduce stroke burden significantly.
