Hyperphosphatemia, abnormally high serum phosphate levels results from an increased phosphate intake, decreased phosphate excretion, or a disorder that shifts intracellular phosphate to extracellular space. Hyperphosphatemia causes a direct stimulus to vascular calcification, causing morbid cardiovascular events contributing to the excess mortality of chronic kidney disease. The NICE clinical guidelines, 2013 describes the management of hyperphosphatemia in the patient with stage 4 and stage 5 kidney disease .
