In order to cap the prices of essential medicines that promote costly branded drugs, the Modi government has proposed a regulation by which every physician would prescribe drugs with generic names legibly and preferably in capital letters. Making medicines cheaper is a politically sensitive issue in India where many patented drugs are too costly for most people and where patented drugs account for under 10% of total drug sales. Pitching for affordable healthcare, Modi said, his government will insist drugs and medical equipment makers to lower the prices. The Medical Council of India (MCI), the apex body has already recommended doctors to prescribe generic drugs.
