Surgeons at a reputed private hospital in Mumbai have removed a massive spleen measuring 90 cm and weighing 8.5 kg from a 37-year-old male patient. The patient has been suffering from splenomegaly and hypersplenism for the last 17 years. Despite receiving medical treatment over the years, his condition worsened over the past year. Finally, he was referred to this hospital. During the surgery, the surgeons discovered that the spleen was compressing the pancreas, diaphragm, stomach, and intestines. The procedure was completed in six hours without complications.
The patient recovered well and was discharged five days later. A hospital spokesperson commented that the largest spleen removal recorded previously in the Guinness Book of World Records measured 73.6 cm and weighed 2.3 kg.
