According to WHO, neonatal asphyxia is a third fatal disease in newborn that causes 23% deaths worldwide. Neonatal asphyxia is depriving of oxygen, especially in a baby’s brain before, during or just after birth. Different causes have been mentioned but prolonged labor, mid forceps or breech delivery, and abruption placenta are more common. Better clinical practices, early diagnosis are some of the major components to reduce the potential risks of neonatal asphyxia.

Neonatal asphyxia or perinatal asphyxia occurs when baby’s brain (primarily) and other organs do not receive enough oxygen due to various reasons. Clinically, neonatal asphyxia is also called as Hypoxic-Ischemic Encephalopathy (HIE) because the primary injury occurs to a brain.
