Neural tube defects (NTDs) are inherited congenital brain and spinal cord disorders. NTDs commonly occur during the first month of pregnancy due to the failure of the neural tube closure during embryogenesis. These defects are of two types, spina bifida and anencephaly. The prevalence of neural tube defects varies from one to 10 per 1,000 births. The etiology of NTD is multifactorial.
