Fungi are a leading cause of infections and deaths worldwide. Current anti-fungal drugs have started being ineffective due to the emergence of drug-resistant fungi. Novel antifungal drugs are hence needed to combat this issue. This article summarizes recently found drug molecules to treat resistant fungi. There are about 5 million fungal species, out of which, about 300 are pathogenic. However, only about 20-30 species cause frequent infections in humans.
The most common pathogens reported are Candida, Aspergillus, Pneumocystis, and Cryptococcus species. Per year, these fungal species cause at least 1.4 million deaths worldwide.
