As the NIPAH virus infection death toll has risen to 14, the Union Health Ministry has issued an advisory for healthcare personnel regarding the preventive infection control measures. The Ministry has declared that ‘Nipah Virus Disease is not a major outbreak and only local occurrence limited to two districts in Kerala i.e.
Kozhikode & Malappuram.’ The advisory gives some important instructions to healthcare personnel such as: Washing hands thoroughly with soap and water for 20 seconds after contact with a sick patient Practicing standard infection control practices while handling NIPAH cases (suspected/ confirmed) Limiting the use of injections and sharp objects.
