The Kerala Health Department has confirmed the first Nipah virus infection in the state after the blood samples of 2 people were analyzed who died of viral fever in Kozhikode district. The hospitals in Kerala are on high alert monitoring the disease and its spread. According to WHO, this viral infection is a newly emerging zoonosis which is transmitted from animals to the humans. This Nipah virus belongs to the genus Henipavirus . The natural host of the virus are fruit bats of the Pteropodidae family.
A bat was found in the well of the infected persons house, which is now closed and sealed. So far, this virus has claimed 10 lives and several people are under observation.
