The National Medical Commission (NMC) is proposing a system that could make a doctor’s registration and disciplinary history visible across state boundaries, as part of efforts to create a more integrated national framework for medical registration. The proposal is outlined in the draft Registration of Medical Practitioners and Licence to Practice Medicine (Amendment) Regulations, 2026, published on August 11. Under the proposed framework, the National Medical Register (NMR) would be linked electronically with State Medical Council registers and would function as a central repository for registration details and disciplinary orders issued by State Medical Councils, the NMC and its Ethics and Medical Registration Board (EMRB).
