The Union health ministry will set up a medical board to assess the myriad diagnostic tools, drugs, implants and vaccines and determine the most appropriate and cost-effective solutions for Indian settings. The Medical Technology Assessment Board will generate broad but standard guidelines for diagnosis and treatment, taking into account India's health-care needs, priorities and resource constraints, senior officials with the department of health research said today. Many doctors believe that medical decisions are now influenced by sections of the industry or professional associations of doctors and may not always be the most cost-effective solution.
