Self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) testing is not useful for non-insulin treated T2DM patients, says a JAMA Internal Medicine report. SMBG is well-accepted practice for DM patients treated with insulin. However, this finding becomes significant because T2DM patients who not treated with insulin, are also often recommended glucose monitoring.

The following categories of patients are expected to benefit from SMBG: Type 1 DM patients Type 2 DM patients on multiple daily doses of insulin Pregnant DM patients on insulin Patients on insulin pump therapy There are various controversies regarding utility of SMBG in non-insulin treated T2DM patients.
