Hospital-acquired pneumonia (HAP) or nosocomial pneumonia is an infection caused during the course of hospital admission in patients receiving mechanical ventilation. The condition is prevalent in 10-20% of hospitalized patients who receive mechanical ventilation for more than 48 hours. Studies have shown that patients with HAP are at a high risk of mortality, hence it is important to keep a track of the disease and its associated risks. Management of HAP requires timely diagnosis and effective treatment.
