Empyema is defined as pus in the pleural space. Typically it is a complication of pneumonia but can arise due to other conditions like trauma, esophageal rupture and as a post-surgical complication. Late diagnosis and onset of appropriate therapy contribute to increased morbidity and higher hospitalization cost.

Few previous studies suggested that the use of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) during community-acquired pneumonia may be associated with an increased risk of empyema, but was not validated by any study to exclude the possible protopathic bias.
