Diabetes is not a single disease but a group of disorders. The common feature of all these disorders is high glucose level in the blood. That is why we diagnose diabetes by measuring the glucose level in the blood. Why is this a group of disorders? This is because the cause of diabetes is different in different individuals. For instance, some people have predominant insulin resistance (elevated useless insulin levels in the blood).
The treatment for these individuals is different than those individuals who do not produce enough insulin in the body. Some persons develop diabetes after some medications, while some develop after surgery of the pancreas or after inflammation of the pancreas. All varieties are treated differently.
