Oral mucositis (OM) is an adverse effect of cancer treatment, including chemotherapy and radiation therapy. About 90% of head and neck cancer patients receiving chemo- and radiotherapies and 60 to 85% of cancer patients receiving hematopoietic stem cell transplantation develop OM. Its characteristic features include erythema, ulceration, and atrophy of the oral mucosa. In addition, OM leads to alterations in taste, dysphagia, secondary infections, and weight loss.
However, OM can be managed by anti-inflammatory agents, antimicrobials, natural medications, laser therapy, cryotherapy, and by maintaining oral hygiene. To gain more insight, join us for a session with our oral medicine and radiology specialist Dr. Priyanka Sakhavalkar as she discusses the importance of the “Oral Mucositis: An Urgent and Unmet Need of Cancer Patients” on 7 th February 2025, 3:00 PM IST onwards .
