Low bone strength increases the risk of fracture in osteoporosis, a prevalent systemic skeletal disease. Osteoporosis is diagnosed by measuring bone mineral density (BMD) or, in rare situations, by the presence of a fragility fracture or a high fracture risk without regard to BMD. Examination of the secondary causes of osteoporosis allows for identifying and mitigating the possibly reversible fracture risk factors. Osteoporosis can be treated by several therapies.
