A recent study published in the Journal of Gastroenterology has revealed that alarmin, a nutrient present in breast milk help to provide immunity against several gastrointestinal diseases in newborns. Alarmin is the protein that potentially fights against intestinal bacteria and protects against several infectious diseases. The traces of alarmin were also found in the intestine, suggesting its production by intestinal cells to some extent. The study details: The study was done on 72 full-term and 49 preterm infants over the first year of their lives.

The doctors performed ELISA analysis of the stool samples from these infants and estimated the levels of two alarmin variants, viz. S100A8 and S100A9.
