Carotid artery stenting (CAS) has emerged in the last 15 years as minimally invasive technique to surgery. This article illustrates indications where CAS is beneficial, and discusses advantages and disadvantages of different types of carotid stents. The treatment options for carotid occlusive disease include medical management, carotid endarterectomy (CEA), carotid angioplasty, and stenting. For more than 50 years CEA has been considered the standard treatment for severe asymptomatic and symptomatic carotid stenonsis; Whereas carotid artery stenting (CAS) is offered in patients considered to be too comorbid to undergo surgery.
