Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is caused due to the buildup of atherosclerotic plaque in the arteries, resulting in a reduction in blood flow in the lower extremity arteries. PAD affects over 200 million adults globally. Moreover, smokers are four times more likely to get PAD than non-smokers, having the risk of progressing toward critical limb ischemia and amputation. The current guidelines suggest that patients should be treated with statins and either aspirin or cilostazol. Making lifestyle changes is also a key factor for PAD patients.
