While pain and hemorrhage are among the most common complications following tonsillectomy, biologic therapies have emerged as a potential strategy to enhance tissue healing. To explore this further, a clinical trial investigated whether topical autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) could improve wound healing and reduce pain in 200 patients undergoing bilateral tonsillectomy. Among the 195 patients with evaluable follow-up data, those in the PRP group experienced significantly lower postoperative pain over the first 10 days after surgery compared with the control group (difference: β0.8 VAS units).
Similarly, the PRP group also showed better wound healing on postoperative days 7, 10, and 14. By day 14, complete mucosal healing was observed more often with PRP than with control treatment (78% vs 59%). Rates of secondary post-tonsillectomy hemorrhage were not significantly different, andβ¦
