Poor oral health is found to be associated with poor control of blood pressure in the patients diagnosed with hypertension. A study published in the journal Hypertension (Davide Pietropaoli et al., 2018) indicates the association of gum inflammation, gum infection and tooth damage with worsening of blood pressure in patients with hypertension. The study found that patients with severe periodontitis had systolic blood pressure 3 mmHg higher than those with good oral health. The findings of this study highlight the importance of good oral health in the prevention of adverse cardiovascular events arising from poor control of blood pressure in hypertension patients.
