I came across a case where an ayush doctor had prescribed Prednisolone for acute on chronic sinusitis? The patient had repeated episodes of blocked nose but no investigation was done to rule out any other cause of blocked nose and sinus . When I spoke with the prescribing doctor he said that most of ENT doctors prescribe it. I am shocked at such rampant usage of  steriod  without trying to know its cause. No antibiotics were prescribed.

His logic was that his WBC count was normal which flawed as in acute sinusitis WBC count need not necessarily be high till there is fever. Also, in chronic allergic sinusitis does a short course of 5 days  steroid make any difference as allergic causes tends to repeat with exposure of allergen and tendency of person to allergy? Even if steroids are to be given why oral and not intranasal one? Any ENT senior please comment on this.
