The best-defined primary esophageal motor disorder is achalasia. However, symptoms such as dysphagia, regurgitation and chest pain can be caused by other esophageal motility disorders. Unfortunately, due to the lack of any test to objectively define these disorders, standardisation regarding the diagnosis and management of these conditions had not been possible. With the evolution of the motility studies from conventional manometry to High-resolution manometry with very closely placed channels and development of a 3D pressure topography and also the development of impedance study showing the bolus transit through the esophagus things have changed.
