There are over 7000 rare diseases globally and about 450 of them have been reported in India. One out of 20 Indians is affected by a rare disease. A lack of existing and effective treatment for these rare diseases adds to the high level of pain and suffering endured by patients and their families. It becomes imperative to create awareness for such diseases in order to initiate research for finding the cures.

Introduction As per WHO, a rare disease is an often-debilitating lifelong condition or disorder with a prevalence of one or less per 1,000 population. Over 350 million people worldwide are affected, with approximately 70 million in India. Besides the genetic origin, that accounts for almost 80% of rare diseases, other common causes remain the infections, allergies, and environmental causes.
