Healthy sleep is a determining factor for physical and mental health in children. The two mechanisms responsible for regulating sleep are circadian rhythm and melatonin secretion, both of which are affected by outdoor artificial light at night (ALAN), such as streetlights and billboards. Rapid urbanization has drastically increased the global proportion of land area exposure to ALAN, leading to a higher rate of sleep disorders. A Chinese cross-sectional study assessed ALAN exposure on sleep patterns (Figure1). The outdoor ALAN exposure (obtained from the satellite imagery data) was kept within 500 m of each participant’s residential address and was measured in nanowatts per centimeters squared per steradian (nW/cm 2 /sr).
