As per the Indian Medical Council Regulations, 2002, doctors cannot solicit patients directly or indirectly. Also, no doctor can make high claims about any procedure. ‘You aren’t miracle workers, so don’t promise patients a cure or advertise money back schemes’ — this is the latest direction issued to doctors by the Indian Medical Association (IMA). The association, which has 2.5 lakh members across India, has started a ‘re-education’ programme for its doctors to refresh details of what is allowed and what is a violation of medical ethics under the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette and Ethics) Regulations, 2002.
