Retinal detachment occurs when the multilayer neurosensory retina separates from the underlying retinal pigment epithelium and choroid. This separation results in ischemia and rapid and progressive photoreceptor degeneration. Timely diagnosis and treatment minimizes the vision loss and the degenerative changes.
