According to a report published by Lancet Public Health, the number of suicides in India is increasing at an alarming rate. In 2016, 2.3 lakhs of suicide deaths were reported from India by the study. This figure is almost double the number of suicide-related deaths cited by National Crime Records Bureau. The number of deaths due to suicide is higher than the number of deaths occurring due to AIDS or maternity-related complications.

While suicide rates are high amongst both men and women, the study shows that 1 out of every 3 women committing suicide is from India. Tackling the issue is a complex problem with no definite solution. However, given the alarming rise in numbers, suicide has become no less than a public health issue. Source: The Economic Times
