A new study by Japanese researchers has revealed that the risk factors of metabolic syndrome are also high in non-obese individuals. However, the lack of regular exercise, which is a significant risk factor of metabolic syndrome, is high only in obese individuals. A combination of hyperglycemia, high blood pressure, abdominal obesity, and dyslipidemia from metabolic syndrome results in diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (CVD).

The Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare of Japan implemented health checkups for people between the ages of 40 and 74 to prevent incidences of diabetes and CVD. They measured the BMI and waist circumference of individuals to determine obesity and provided health guidance only to obese individuals who have two or more complications of metabolic syndrome.
