Delirium is a syndrome in which a patient experiences a brief and fluctuating episode of decline in attention and cognitive ability mainly due to a medical condition or drugs. In a study conducted to analyze the effect of delirium on mortality in elderly patients, it was observed that mortality rate increased by 11% for every other 48 h of active delirium, thereby stressing the need for timely detection and treatment. The present guideline developed by the Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network and accredited by The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) can prove to be helpful in timely detection and management of delirium and in-turn help in its risk reduction.
