In a modeling study published in Annals of Surgery, Wright et al. estimated the population-level impact of performing opportunistic salpingectomy (OS) during cholecystectomy (CCK) in women ≥40 years. OS, which lowers ovarian cancer risk by ~65% , could prevent up to 850 lifetime ovarian cancer cases if implemented in 40% of all women ≥40 years undergoing CCK, with an even greater reduction if adoption rates reach 80% . These findings suggest that incorporating OS during CCK could be a cost-effective, large-scale primary prevention strategy with significant long-term public health benefit.
