Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is associated with altered body composition, such as low muscle mass, which affects clinical outcomes. However, body composition changes in overweight patients with IBD are less identified and understood. This article outlines the research findings of a recent study which reports sarcopenia as a predictor of surgery in obese IBD patients. The prevalence of obesity is quite different across different studies and the general population.

According to recent evidence, up to 32.7% of IBD patients are obese, and up to 30.3% of Crohn's disease patients and up to 35.2% of ulcerative colitis patients. Moreover, obesity is associated with more anal and perianal complication.
