Sin taxes, laden on the goods with hazardous nature and adverse health effects such as tobacco and alcohol increase the government revenue for healthcare services and, simultaneously discourage the consumption of such products. Oral cancer is among the top three types of cancers in India. Severe alcoholism, use of tobacco like cigarettes, smokeless tobacco, betel nut chewing and human papillomavirus (HPV) among the lower socio-economic strata are the most common contributors. The intended objective of these reforms is to excise the use by putting the tax on alcohol and tobacco to generate resources for financing the expansion of health care.
