Skin changes are frequently seen in diabetes and can often be the first signs of poorly controlled blood sugar. People with diabetes may develop conditions such as diabetic dermopathy (shin spots), acanthosis nigricans (dark, velvety skin in body folds), and fungal or bacterial infections due to impaired immunity. Delayed wound healing, dry skin, and itching are also frequent. In long-standing or poorly controlled diabetes, more serious conditions like diabetic foot ulcers or necrobiosis lipoidica can occur.
