A 65-year-old man with a history of hypertension (treated with a beta-blocker and an angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor) and hyperlipidemia (treated with a statin) was examined by his primary care provider. His blood pressure was noted to be 200/100 mm Hg. He was sent to the emergency department and admitted for further evaluation and therapy.
