The WHO classifies esophago-gastro-duodenoscopy (OGD) as an aerosol-generating procedure (AGP). There are recent aerosol sampling studies demonstrating higher particle concentration than background during OGD. 1,2 Common source events contributing to this rise during OGD are endoscope insertion/removal, coughing, deep breathing, GI eructation, or retching.

No study has been conducted yet to pinpoint the most likely source events giving rise to an increased level of aerosol generation during OGD. Therefore, a study was undertaken to measure the aerosol generation during OGD, compare the levels with natural respiratory events (breathing, volitional coughing), and identify high index risk source events responsible for increased levels of aerosol generation during OGD. 3 Study details Key findings The OGD-evoked coughs were responsible for high concentrations of aerosol (mean peakโ€ฆ
