Squamous cell skin carcinomas are associated with considerable morbidity and disfigurement due to the involvement of face. The likelihood of metastases requires appropriate treatment with surgery and other adjuvants. Though non-melanoma skin cancers are thought to be rarer among dark skinned population, an increasing incidence in Indian population has been reported by some studies. Most Indian studies have reported squamous cell carcinoma as the most common type, though some recent studies have reported an increased prevalence of basal cell carcinoma.
