Recently, the city of Indore in Central India witnessed a very tragic and unfortunate incident where 14 people lost their vision after routine cataract surgery. Indore Eye Hospital had been in operation for over 2 decades; the chief physician had performed tens of thousands of successful surgeries. Then this deeply tragic and unacceptable event took place where so many people were harmed, many irreversibly, due to a medical error. Based on the investigations so far, it seems that the vision loss in these patients was caused by Pseudomonas infection; the source of which is not clear.

The contamination came possibly from the operation room. Criminal charges have been levied against this senior doctor and the hospital has been closed.
