Lymphadenopathy refers to an increase in the size of lymph nodes or altered consistency or number of the lymph nodes. So, any lymph node larger than around 1 cm can be defined as lymphadenopathy. Also, enlargement of lymph nodes in two or more lymph nodal areas that are non-contagious can be determined as generalized lymphadenopathy. However, the involvement of a single area characterizes localized lymphadenopathy. In day to day clinical practice, more than 3/4th of patients present with localized lymphadenopathy while 1/4th represent with generalized lymphadenopathy.
