A recent cross-sectional study evaluated the impact of systemic factors on the foveal avascular zone (FAZ) in 253 patients with essential hypertension and/or type 2 diabetes . Quantitative OCTA analysis revealed a significant positive correlation between mean systolic blood pressure (SBP) and FAZ area (r = 0.151, p < 0.05) . Multivariable linear regression, adjusted for gender and hemoglobin, confirmed SBP as an independent predictor of FAZ enlargement (β = 0.0008, p = 0.037) . These findings underscore the potential role of elevated SBP in retinal microvascular remodeling and suggest that stringent blood pressure control may mitigate microvascular compromise in high-risk populations.
