Tamil Nadu has planned to launch an initiative that includes comprehensive pre-birth planning for women and the establishment of a 24x7 war room to monitor maternal health. Currently, 54 pregnant women die per one lakh deliveries in Tamil Nadu, a rate higher than in Kerala, Maharashtra, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh. Tamil Nadu formed an 18-member state-level task force to address this issue and reduce the maternal mortality rate (MMR) to 10 per one lakh deliveries. During its first meeting, the task force proposed the creation of the war room.
The war room will have six doctors from the Directorate of Medical Education (DME), Directorate of Medical Services (DMS), and Directorate of Public Health (DPH), along with technical officers.
