IPF: Immature Platelet Fraction, can be a guiding test to predict need of platelet transfusion in Dengue Fever IPF is a hematological parameter in vogue for last few years. Immature Platelet were First described in 1969 by Ingram & Coopersmith in peripheral blood of dogs following acute blood loss as: platelets with increased RNA content. Now it is known that, in a similar way to reticulocyte count which indicates red cell production,  IPF levels in blood indicate level of bone marrow production of platelets. (i.e. reticulated platelets indicate the rate of thrombopoiesis).

%IPF is a measure of young platelets in peripheral blood (range approx 1 to 5% of total platelet count). Low levels indicate poor intrinsic thrombopoietin activity.
