The optimal management of esophageal cancer patient is a matter of debate. There is very little data available on the benefit of chemotherapy in esophageal cancer patients with residual disease after trimodality therapy. The present article is a synopsis of the original article published in a renowned American Journal of Clinical Oncology. There are some studies that suggest the degree of pathologic response after neoadjuvant therapy is predictive of survival.

Specifically, residual disease achieved a worse survival compared with patients who had a complete pathologic response.
