A 35-year-old head and neck surgeon with an unremarkable medical history presented with a phlegmon of the flexor tendon sheath of the right hand. Surgeon’s Unfortunate Exposure To Infected Blood The surgeon acquired an unintentional exposure to blood with blade used for drainage of an abscess in a patient’s oral cavity. A deep wound was induced by the bistoury piercing of the index finger pulp of the right hand, with a disrupted epidermal barrier. A soft tissue abscess of the finger appeared 7 days after the initial trauma.

Both, the patient who was operated on and the surgeon were negative for HIV and hepatitis B/C virus testing.
