Asia’s first woman neurosurgeon known to treat patients for free and inspiration to many women neurosurgeon across India, Dr. T S Kanaka passed away on 14 Nov at the age of 86 due to ill-health. Born and bought up in Chennai, in December 1954 she achieved her MBBS degree and in March 1968 she became Master of Surgery in Neurosurgery. “Being the 1 st in Asia, she was also the 3 rd woman neurosurgeon in the world”.
In India, Dr.T S Kanaka was the first neurosurgeon to perform chronic electrode implants in the brain and also one of the initiators of DBS performance in 1975 only. She was well known for her expertise in stereotactic surgery. She worked as an Indian Army medical officer during the 1962 India-China war and then continued her medical career with Government General Hospital in Chennai.
